What is Best Buddies?
Best Buddies is a national non-profit organization established in 1989. The mission of Best Buddies is to enhance the lives of people with disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships and employment. At the middle school level, Best Buddies is basically a friendship club, which creates buddy pairs between students with and without disabilities.
When are we going to meet?
We will have Best Buddies club meetings at least once a month during the school year. These will take place after school. We will also plan special events such as attending a school sporting event or going to a movie as a group on the weekend. Listen to announcements for upcoming events and activities.
What is involved with being a member of Best Buddies?
There are three types of memberships in Best Buddies
Peer Buddy – A Peer Buddy is a middle school student who makes a commitment to be paired in a one-to-one friendship with a Buddy for one academic year.
You are required, as a buddy, to touch base with your assigned buddy at least once a week. This could be during lunch, passing period, after school (via text, phone call or in the hallway on the way to the bus) or during a club activity.
Buddy – A student with a mild to moderate intellectual or developmental disabilities who is matched in a one-to-one friendship with a Peer Buddy for one academic year.
Associate Member/Associate Buddy – A chapter member who is not matched in a one-to-one friendship. Because there is so much interest at WCMS, we have several members who are Associate Members. Even though associate members are not matched with a Buddy, they can attend and participate in all club activities. The more the merrier!
